A flickering check engine light on your Audi Q8 is not the same as a steady one — it usually points to an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converters.
Here’s what to check first, and how long it’s safe to keep driving.
A Flickering Light Is a Different Animal Than a Steady One
If your Q8's check engine light comes on and just sits there glowing, that's the car saying "something's off, get it looked at soon." But when it flickers — blinking on and off, especially while the idle stumbles and shakes — the message is much more urgent. A flashing or flickering check engine light almost always means there is an active misfire: one or more cylinders are not burning fuel properly right now, and raw fuel is being pushed into the hot exhaust. That unburned fuel can melt or clog your catalytic converters in a matter of minutes, and those are expensive parts on a Q8. So treat a flickering light as a yellow-to-red warning, not a "I'll book it in next month" warning.
