Chevy Traverse Cold-Start Stalling: What’s Going On and How to Fix It

If your Traverse II is stalling right after a cold start in winter, don’t panic. I’ll walk you through the usual suspects—from fuel pressure to throttle body—and whether it’s safe to keep driving.

Why Does It Stall Right After a Cold Start?

I know that sinking feeling when your Traverse fires up, runs for two seconds, and then coughs dead on a frosty morning. In my shop, we see this a lot with the Traverse II, and the good news is it’s rarely a catastrophic failure. Cold weather makes the engine demand a richer fuel mixture and a stable idle. When one sensor or fuel component is slightly weak, the computer can’t compensate quickly enough, and the engine stumbles before the idle control loop takes over.
