A front-end clunk over bumps usually points to worn sway bar links, strut mounts, or control arm bushings. Here is what to check first and when to stop driving.
Why your Continental X clunks over bumps
That hollow or metallic knock you hear when the front tires hit a pothole is rarely a mystery to a suspension tech. On a Lincoln Continental X, the front end uses MacPherson struts, lower control arms, a stabilizer bar, and a steering rack. When any bushing, ball joint, or mount wears out, it creates clearance. Under a sharp bump, that clearance closes with a clunk. Start with the easy, common suspects: stabilizer bar end links, strut mounts and upper strut bearings, and lower control arm bushings or ball joints. Those parts take the brunt of every bump and are the usual culprits.
