Why your diesel M6 is smoking black and losing power
Black smoke under load usually means the engine is getting too much fuel for the air it can breathe, or the exhaust is restricted. On a diesel Geometry M6, the usual suspects are a clogged or sticking EGR valve, carbon-choked intake manifold, a DPF that is loading up and raising backpressure, a boost leak, or sticking turbo vanes. Dirty MAF/MAP sensors, a restricted air filter, a clogged fuel filter, and tired injectors can also cause similar symptoms. These faults often overlap, so it pays to diagnose before replacing parts.
- EGR system: soot buildup can stop the valve from closing fully, which reduces fresh air and causes smoke.
- DPF: a partially blocked filter increases exhaust backpressure, so the engine feels flat and may smoke more.
- Air/boost path: split intercooler hoses, a leaking boost pipe, or a sticking variable-vane turbo can starve the engine of air.
- Fuel side: over-fuelling from a faulty injector, worn injector tips, or incorrect rail pressure can create black smoke.
