A flickering check engine light and rough idle in your Jeep Gladiator usually points to a misfire or vacuum leak. Start with these diagnostics and know when to stop driving.
Why is the check engine light flickering and the idle rough?
When you see the check engine light flicker off and on while the engine feels like it's shaking or wanting to stall, your Gladiator is telling you it's having an incomplete combustion event. The most common culprits are a failing spark plug or ignition coil, a vacuum leak (especially in the PCV or intake hoses), or a dirty MAF sensor. Because the light flickers rather than staying solid, this usually means an intermittent misfire that can worsen quickly, or a lean fuel condition that only appears during certain RPMs.
Start by checking the easiest things first. Listen for any hissing sounds around the intake manifold and vacuum lines — a cracked hose after a trail ride or after hitting a pothole is very common on Jeeps. Then, inspect the air filter and clean the mass airflow sensor with proper electronics cleaner. If the engine has more than 40,000 miles, plan on replacing spark plugs and swapping suspected coil packs. Use a simple OBD-II scanner to see which cylinder is misfiring; that will save you hours of guesswork.
