A clunk from the front of your 408 over bumps is usually a worn drop link, top mount or control arm bushing.
Here’s what a mechanic checks first — and when to stop driving.
That dull clunk you hear when the front of your Peugeot 408 rolls over a speed bump or a broken patch of tarmac is one of the most common complaints we see on these cars — and it's rarely a mystery once the car is on a lift. The front suspension is a MacPherson strut layout with an anti-roll bar, lower wishbones and a top mount bearing at the top of each strut, and every one of those joints has a rubber bush or a ball socket that wears out with mileage. What matters is figuring out which component is knocking, because a tired anti-roll bar link is an annoyance, while a worn ball joint or a cracked top mount is a genuine safety issue.
