A front-end clunk over bumps in a Model X is usually a worn control arm or sway bar link. Here’s what to inspect first and whether it’s safe to keep driving.
Hearing a clunk from the front suspension of your Tesla Model X over bumps or potholes is a common complaint. Before you worry about a major breakdown, know that this is often a worn suspension component that can be identified with a careful inspection. The multi-link front suspension on the Model X uses a lot of separate bushings, ball joints, and links, and most of these can be replaced individually. There isn't a specific sensor that will flag a loose bushing, so you'll mostly rely on physical inspection — but on air-suspension models, the ride height sensors can tell you if the suspension is sagging, which points to a different problem in the air spring. It's hard to tell which component it is by sound alone, so a physical check is the most reliable way to narrow it down.
