A front-end clunk over bumps on a Mazda CX-9 is often a worn sway bar link, bushing, strut mount, or ball joint. Here’s how to narrow it down and know when it’s safe to drive.
What that front-end clunk usually means
A clunk from the front of your Mazda CX-9 over bumps and potholes is a classic sign that something in the suspension has play. The good news is that many of these faults are modest, replaceable parts rather than a whole corner assembly. The important part is to find the play before it wears out tires or damages nearby components. On a CX-9, the first things I usually check are the sway bar end links and sway bar bushings, because they are common clunkers and relatively inexpensive. After that, I look at strut mounts, lower control arm bushings, ball joints, and brake caliper hardware. There usually is not a sensor that causes this kind of noise; it is a mechanical wear or looseness issue.
