A clunk from the front of your Duster II over bumps usually points to worn anti-roll bar links, top mounts, or control arm bushings. Here’s what to check first and when to stop driving.
Why your Duster II clunks over bumps
I hear this complaint a lot on the Renault Duster II, and the good news is that the front suspension is fairly simple: MacPherson struts, a lower control arm on each side, an anti-roll bar, and the links that connect it. A clunk over speed bumps or potholes is usually metal-to-metal play somewhere in that chain. The most common culprits are worn anti-roll bar drop links, tired strut top mounts and bearings, and perished lower control arm bushings. Less often it can be a worn ball joint, a loose subframe bolt, a failing shock absorber, or play in the steering rack. Cold weather often makes the noise worse because rubber bushings harden.
