Is your Tiguan’s brake pedal vibrating when you stop? That rhythmic pulsation is often a sign of warped brake discs. Find out what’s happening, what to inspect first, and how serious the issue is.
What Causes the Pulsation?
When you press the brake pedal in your Volkswagen Tiguan II and feel a rhythmic vibration—like a shimmy or pulse—the most likely culprit is a warped brake rotor (disc). Over time, repeated heavy braking or riding the brakes can create uneven wear or heat spots on the rotor surface. This makes the rotor thickness vary, so as the brake pads clamp down, they pass over high and low spots, sending that pulsation back through the pedal.
Other possible causes include:
- Uneven pad deposits — pad material can transfer unevenly, creating a similar feel.
- Sticking caliper piston — a caliper that doesn’t release fully can overheat one rotor, causing warping.
- Worn wheel bearings — loose bearings can mimic pedal pulsation, but you’ll usually hear a growl too.
- ABS or wheel-speed sensor issues — rare here; ABS activation feels different (more like a rapid pulse, not a slow wobble).
