A pulsating brake pedal on your Volvo S60 III usually points to uneven brake disc thickness or runout. Here’s what to check first and whether it’s safe to drive.
Why your S60 III’s brake pedal pulses
When you press the brake pedal and feel a rhythmic pulsing or shudder, it’s almost always the front brake discs—though the rear can do it too. On the Volvo S60 III, the most common culprit is disc thickness variation (DTV) or lateral runout. That can come from uneven pad deposits (often called ‘warping’ but really friction material stuck to the rotor), a sticking caliper piston, worn slide pins, or a hub that isn’t perfectly clean. A worn wheel bearing or control arm bushing can also let the disc wobble under load, mimicking a warped rotor.
