A humming or whining noise from the gearbox at highway speed is rarely random. Here’s what causes it on the Omoda E5, what to check first, and when to stop driving.
What's actually making that noise on your Omoda E5
Your Omoda E5 doesn't have a conventional multi-speed gearbox. It has a single-speed reduction gearbox — often called the reducer or final drive — that steps the electric motor's high RPM down to the wheels. So the whine you're hearing isn't a gear change; it's a steady tone that rises and falls with road speed. Because there's no engine noise to mask it, EV drivers hear this far more clearly than they would in a petrol car. Some of that is perfectly normal gear-mesh noise. Some of it is the first sign of wear. The whole job is telling those two apart before a small noise becomes an expensive repair.
