Possible Causes of Cold Start Stalling
When your BYD Song Plus engine stalls moments after a cold start, especially in freezing weather, the culprit is usually one of a few common issues. The most frequent cause is a faulty engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor that sends an incorrect reading to the ECU, leading to an overly rich or lean fuel mixture. Another likely suspect is a dirty or failing mass air flow (MAF) sensor, which miscalculates intake air volume. Other possibilities include a weak fuel pump or clogged injectors that can’t maintain proper pressure in the cold, a throttle body fouled with carbon deposits, or an idle air control valve that sticks when temperatures drop. In extreme cold, even the engine oil’s viscosity can play a role—if it’s too thick, the starter may crank slowly, and the engine may struggle to idle.
